This is ALICE'S SCYTHE from PANDORA HEARTS <3
I decide to make Alice scythe since it is sooooo cooollll and it is also one of the characters weapon,
so I jot down what material I wanted to use to make the scythe..
At first it was really a headache since I don't know whether the material that Im going to use is stable or not..
These are the materials that I used:
- 2 foam boards (which is much bigger than me)
- newspapers (draw outline)
- Spray - Black, Red, Transparent
- Cutter, scissors, cellotape, masking tape
- pipes ( You can get the 2.5cm/ 1 inch wide, since that's the suitable size, not to big or small)
- pipe connectors, 1 T connector, 2 L connectors, and 1 for the bottom to seal it...
- Strings (for the pipe outer layer) (U can get the one that Scouts use to tie stuffs) (Will provide pic below)
- Glue Gun (A LOT, better use transparent ones...)
- cardboard (not too thick!!! because it is for the curve part of the scythe)
- polystyrene (1 inch thick)
- Pencil, eraser, those u need to draw
- Laptop or phone (in case you want to search for more images on the scythe)
- Drawing block ( not too thin and not too thick)
SO LETS BEGINNNNN>>>
1. SKETCHING/ DRAWING
- Draw out ur scythe on how big u want it to be...
- Just sketch it out on how u are planning to make it...
- Don't worry if it is not accurate or not nice~ that's why it is call a sketch~ (>w<)/
- After sketching, u are ready to sketch a bigger one!!
2.TRANSFERRING TO NEWSPAPERS
- First of all, take our ur foam board, put it on the floor
- Now, take newspapers out and paste them together to get the same size as the foam board...
- Then you draw ur scythe pattern on the newspaper according to the size..
(you can adjust how big u want)
- U will get something like this~
- Measure the pipes size on the newspaper
2.TRANSFERRING TO NEWSPAPERS
- First of all, take our ur foam board, put it on the floor
- Now, take newspapers out and paste them together to get the same size as the foam board...
- Then you draw ur scythe pattern on the newspaper according to the size..
(you can adjust how big u want)
- U will get something like this~
- I only measure the horizontal part..because im only using that part...
- There u have it~ a sketch of the scythe (U still got a lot more to do)
- u can draw 1 inch into the scythe...to make the curve part
3. PIPES
- Now here comes the pipes...
- I use the 1 inch wide pipes, because that is the most suitable size for handles
- Measure how tall u wan ur scythe to be..
- Better if it is taller than u.. Looks something like this below~
![]() |
| sorry for the derp face..=3= sister took the picture when im talking ish ishhh.... |
- Place in the T connector on the pipe to measure the connecting part
- Don't worry about the sketch, it can be expand and reduce
- Measure the pipe is the most important thing
- After u've measured, cut the pipe into the suitable length
- BECAREFUL at this stage!!! using the saw is dangerous....
- There you have it~ one part of the scythe~ and continue the same stage and u will get something like this~
- and the seal connector u can put at the bottom part of the pipe~
- PIPING...DONE>>>
4. CUTTING
- I didn take picture of this stage because was busy cutting the board and did other stages...OTL
- This is before I cut the foam board..
- First, cut out the newspaper sketch and transfer it to the drawing blocks, so that it is more heavy (so taht it won't fly here and there when u are drawing it on the board)
- At this stage, this is the chance for u to expand or reduce the scythe's size..
- I drew it bigger after that, because I scared that it will be small, if it is bigger u can adjust the size again, smaller, u cant do anything to make it bigger...or else u hv to buy more foam board for that.
- After u hv measure everything on the drawing block, cut it out again, then u can place it on the foam board and cut it using the cutter.
- Cut 2 pieces out for the front and back.
5. GLUE, POLYSTYRENE and MORE GLUEEEE
- After you have cut out those two pieces, choose one side that is more nicer to become the outside
- Put aside the longer pipe, we will do that part after we hv finish the upper part.
- Use the glue gun to glue the pipe onto the board, make sure it is very stable (swing it by holding the pipe with the board if u want to, ahhaXD, that's what I did)
- DON'T Glue the other side first, because there are some more things to put in to make it more stable.
- This stage also I didn get to take pictures cause of my hands busy with cutting and gluing which makes my hands dirty and I dont want to touch my phone...sorryyyyyy....
- This is the overall stage, I cut some space on the middle of the polystyrene so that it can hold the foam boards.
- Cut the foam board and extend it to the outer layer more so that we can make the curve part...
- This is what it looks like at the side
- you can see the polystyrene are like holding the foam board.
- make it as stable as possible, use more glue on this part.
- When everything is stable, u can glue the other side to the pipe~
- since the pipe is the one that holds the foam more stable, glue more!!!
- you also can put some on the polystyrene..make it really really stableeeeeee...
- don't worry if the inside layer is a mess or not nice, because we are going to cover it after that~ 0w0/
6. CURVE PART
- In this stage you will need cardboards, not too thick and thin also
- and 1/2 Inch polystyrene or u can use back the 1 inch polystyrene and cut into half.
- you can use this kind of cardboard as the picture below
- not too thick and not too thin..

- I only got these kinds of cardboards at home, that time I forgot to bring the bigger ones from my hostel....OTL
- There are much more bigger ones, almost 1 meter high, U can use that or like me use smaller ones...
- take ur 1/2 inch polystyrene and cut into long strips
- the width should be 1-1.5 cm, then stuff the polystyrene into the scythe like this~
- This is to make the curve part more stable
- repeat the same thing all around the scythe and you will get like this~
- use glue gun and stick every part of the polystyrene, so that it really stays there,
- as for the sharp edge, I glued it like this~
- Now we begin with the cutting~
- Slant ur cutter like this...then begin cutting~
- and you will hv the base part of ur curve part~
- take your cardboard, if it is small like mine, cut it into half vertically so that you can easily measure the curve part, if it is the bigger ones, measure how wide is the curve part and just simply cut one long strip out...
- while cutting, DON'T cut is STRAIGHT..(I tried a few times and wasted a lot of parts to use)
- cut it slant a bit so that it can fit other parts...
- press the card board firmly onto the upper part and lower part of the foam board, and also onto the polystyrene..
- draw the lines and cut it out and you can straight paste it on the scythe
- If you are not sure of pasting first, u can use masking tape to tape it on first..like this
- At the first side I did what I did like the pic above, but then I realise is more easier if I just cut and paste it straight..and it works....faster...hahhaXD
- repeat the same thing on the other side and you will get the curve side of the scythe~ ( >w<)/
- There you have it!!!
- oh yea MAKE SURE YOU DON'T COVER THE CONNECTING PART!!!
- cover only the sides, don't cover the bottom one...
- connect the staff together and see if it is the right height~
- and there you have it~ a scythe~
7. GLUING STRING
- this is the kind of string I used...the one that scouts use to tie..everything..hahaXD
- u measure the strings on ur scythe, u can straight measure how long u wan by circling the staff or u can jus measure vertically then u cut 50 cm+ extra..
- use glue gun to glue..
- sorry I dun hv picture for this because hands full with the glue gun, string and staff.. Q.Q
- glue from the top and leave some space one top because u will need to connect the top part with the inner part of the scythe
- so leave almost 5 cm then u begin to glue ur strings on the staff
- make sure the strings are glue tightly and doesn't come off easily
- Just glue it while turning the staff...
- repeat the same thing on the other side to make like they crossed each other
- after you have done that, let it dry~
- now for the spraying part
8. SPRAYING
- prepare red, black and transparent spray
- if u think that u will use lot, buy one more extra
- go outside to spray, don't spray in ur home, the smell is...URGHHH...
- place newspapers on the floor and place ur scythe on top..
- now begin spraying red on top as base~
- just simply spray, don't need to cover everything
- at least the red got cover a bit then ok already
- then let it dry for a while
- WHEN YOU ARE SPRAYING, don't spray too near, it will become watery, leave almost 10cm away
- Don't spray too much also, because it will be very hard to dry if it is watery
- now for the black
- the black don't need to spray that much
- same as spraying the red coat, leave 10cm away from the scythe
- after you felt that colour is nice, then leave it to dry..reallllyyyyy dry then u flip another part to spray~
- DONT PUT UNDER THE SUN, because the scythe will expand..
- you can start spraying the staff already, same thing, red first then black, then red again then black~
- mix the colour that you want..
- you will get something like this
- when everything is dry...u can start with the transparent spray to make the colour more shiny and the colour will stay longer
9. GET YOUR COSTUME AND POSE~
- now everything is done, you can get into your costume and go events and POSE~
- GOOD LUCK~
